At Ivanhoe, we believe that every child and adult matters and this is at the heart of everything we do. It is important that all members of Ivanhoe College should be able to participate in activities without fear or constant anxiety. We are working with staff, students and parents/carers to create a college community where bullying is not tolerated.
Our Anti-Bullying Policy states, bullying covers a range of areas and how they are tackled depends on the nature of the bullying incident. For clarification purposes, bullying is defined as
“Intentional, selective, unprovoked, repetitive and hurtful behaviour directed towards another person.”
At times incidents will be reported to us that do not meet our definition of bullying but are in breach of our Behaviour Policy. They will still be taken very seriously, investigated and sanctioned according to the policy.
When we were inspected in November 2015, the Ofsted Inspectors reported that;
“During the inspection, students reported that bullying is rare and dealt with very effectively wheneverit occurs.”
“At the start of term, senior leaders undertook a full review of the academy’s approach to preventing and tackling bullying. As a result, policies and practice have been strengthened further to ensure that all students are protected from bullying at all times. Regular checks on the well-being of the very small minority of students who report concerns about bullying are accompanied by timely and where necessary, regular, communication with their parents and carers. Clear action plans are put in place to ensure that worries are resolved quickly and these are informed by the views of the students concerned.”
“Students particularly value the support provided by the student support team. Students say that they know that if ever they are worried, specialist staff are on hand to provide support and guidance and to take action quickly to address their concerns. The quality of care and support provided by Student Support staff is an extremely strong feature of the academy’s work to keep students safe. These and other students also commented very positively on the high levels of staff supervision throughout the school day, including during lesson changeovers, at break and lunchtime and as they board their buses at the end of the school day.”
“Students I met who have special educational needs spoke very positively about the support theyreceive in the learning zone.”
“All of the academy’s safeguarding arrangements benefit from rigorous oversight by the governing body. Governors are extremely well informed about their legal duties and hold senior staff to account very robustly to ensure that students are safe. This includes through searching annual reviews of the academy’s safeguarding policies and practices, led by the governor with specific responsibility for safeguarding.”
In addition to the endorsement by Ofsted we also received the ‘Beyond Bullying Award’ from the Local Authority in 2014. In order to gain this award we had to provide extensive evidence which was rigorously assessed. You can see the visit the Beyond Bullying Website by clicking here.
We are determined to continue our work in this crucial area and we need your support as parents and carers to further eradicate bullying in our school and in our community. Our Anti-Bullying Policy states;
If a student reports being bullied to a parent/carer
1. Please contact a member of the Student Support Team as quickly as possible with as much information as possible
2. We welcome parents/carers supporting their child by completing an ‘Allegation of Bullying Sheet’ which can be downloaded from our website. This document is at the end of this policy in the download section of our website
3. If you need further information or to meet to discuss a bullying issue please contact our Student Support Team
4. If you are concerned about the way in which an issue has been handled, please contact the Vice Principal, Mr Greg Bellmore as soon as possible
