Wow – what a fantastic experience we have had this half term, taking our students to Plas Gwynant for the first time since Covid-19. Every single student was an absolute credit to Ivanhoe and we were so proud of them all.
They took part in a wide range of adventurous activities; including gorge walking (which was a firm favourite amongst the students), mining, mountain walking, kayaking, canoeing and abseiling. All of our students had a go at every activity and really tried their best. The aim of the trip was related to improve the growth mindset of our students. When asked at the end of the trip ‘What did you learn about yourself on the trip?’, some of the students wrote;
“If I put my mind to things, then I can do it”
“I learnt to be more resilient”
“I learnt how I can do anything if I put my mind to it”
“To believe in myself”
“I can do a lot more than I thought I was capable off and discovered how resilient and determined I can be”
“If you’re more positive, you’ll enjoy things more”
As well as all of the outdoor adventurous activities, our students also had to complete a number of jobs per day. This included things such as taking out the compost, hoovering, making their own lunch, setting the table and filling up the bird feeders, to name just a few. The centre staff were amazed by the students, who by the last day were simply told a time they needed to be ready for breakfast having completed all of their jobs. Every single student completed each of their individual jobs and were ready for breakfast on time, which was truly amazing to see.
As well as the day time activities, students also completed a number of evening activities, such as hide and seek in the dark, and the bottle game where you had to go and find the hidden bottles in the woods. They really had to work as a team and the evenings always finished with a hot chocolate made by our hot chocolate monitors.
Within our student feedback, they were also asked to summarise the trip in a few words. I think these entries are a fantastic conclusion of a phenomenal trip with an amazing group of students.
“I have had the best time I have had in a while – I would love to go again. Thank you for taking us”
“Amazing, fun, and loved all the activities”
“One of the best experiences of my life”
“Exhilarating trip with both physically and mentally challenging activities”
“It was a challenging and amazing experience that pushed me to do things outside of my comfort zone”
