At Ivanhoe we encourage all Year 10 students to take part in 1 week's work experience.
Students and their parents will be supported through the process by our careers team and the LEBC.
Work experience is a short-term work placement undertaken by high school students. Many high schools require year 10 students to fulfil a week-long work experience placement. Work experience is most likely not paid, as it is seen as a learning process.
Work experience is a great way of figuring out what you like and dislike about a chosen industry. It can give you a more clear picture of a possible career path. Here are some of the ways it can be beneficial:
Gain insight into an industry that interests you
By year 10, you may begin to think about possible career options. There are many different jobs and careers to choose from. It can be a little overwhelming. Work experience allows you to test out different options and get a feel for what you enjoy.
Establish a professional skill set
As a teenager, it's important to begin establishing professional skills that you can list on your CV. This may be valuable when you begin looking and applying for jobs. Employers can view skills and experience favourably. It can also help you to see what you are good at and what you enjoy.
Experience what working life is like
Getting to see and experience the real working world is valuable for high school students. It gives you a sense of your future and the goals you want to pursue. You may learn some valuable lessons and pick up important knowledge that you don't get in school. It's a chance to put the theory you learn in school to practice. It's good preparation for life after school.
This explains the entire process to parents, from application form to the placement week. It’s a great reminder of what happens now that the paperwork is close to coming into school
This explains to students what they need to do with their paperwork once they receive it. It’s a step by step and really clear so should answer any questions that they might have.
