Year 7 are embarking on the M.V.P program introduced in Scotland initially and being rolled out across the UK at the moment. Ivanhoe School were one of the first schools in the UK to introduce the program a few years ago, led by Mr Perkins and Mr Green and it has been received well by our students. We also train up our own Year 9 MVP mentors who deliver half the lessons to our Year 7 and 8 classes.
‘The Mentors in Violence Prevention programme is an effective bystander intervention programme that gives young people the opportunity to take a leadership role in challenging gender based violence.
As part of the Scottish Government’s Equally Safe strategy, it provides opportunities for young people to explore healthy relationships and is an important tool in supporting wellbeing and positive mental health.’
Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) is a peer mentoring leadership programme for young people. It gives young people the chance to explore and challenge the attitudes, beliefs and cultural norms that underpin gender-based violence.
It addresses a range of behaviours including sexting, controlling behaviour, sexual harassment and consent, and uses a ‘bystander’ approach where individuals are not looked on as potential victims or perpetrators but as empowered and active bystanders with the ability to support and challenge their peers in a safe way. A strong emphasis has been placed on building healthy, respectful relationships both in the school and in the community.
Our Year 8 Students have been taking part in the Sky the Edit New Report Mission. Students have really engaged in the mission and have already created some amazing work.
The Edit is a Sky News initiative was released in 2019 and is still very relevant now.
Young people’s voices and views should be heard and creativity shared. The Edit is a digital storytelling challenge series that gives young people aged 8-18 the chance to create a 90-second news report or a digital infographic about a person, issue, or topic that truly matters to you or your community, exploring the theme of wellbeing: mental, physical, financial, or social.
It helps students to develop their digital skills, it inspires creativity and promotes media literacy as well as developing student agency.
The News Reports your child creates either as a presenter, camera man/woman or producer will be made available for you to see at the end of the Mission.
So far students have been learning about how to create an effective new report and over the past few weeks have been planning their own report. Today they had the chance to start filming their report outside in the cold. All students enjoyed having the opportunity to film their news report, but I don't think all of them enjoyed the cold!!
