Students from Countersthorpe Academy, Winstanley School, Bosworth Academy, Ashby School, Ibstock School and Ivanhoe School took part in a Model United Nations (MUN) Summit over the last week.
Following an overnight flight from London, their first day in India began with a traditional welcome ceremony hosted by our partners at Manav Rachna International School, Charnwood. Students then had the opportunity to sample local cuisine before enjoing a spectacular Light and Sound Show in Delhi's historic Red Fort.
The morning began with a visit to Manav Rachna International School where students took part in Bhangra dancing, enjoyed a collaborative jamming session with the school orchestra, and attended an art workshop. There they learned new techniques while painting pottery before finishing the visit with games of padel on the school's courts.
In the afternoon, students visited Raj Ghat, the memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, explored a scuplture park featuring artwork created entirely from recylced materials, and spent time in Dilli Haat, where plenty of enthusiastic bargaining took place as students searched for crafts and gifts to take home.
Day 3 marked the opening day of the Model UN Summit.
Following an opening ceremony featuring welcome speeches and vibrant dance performance, students joined their allocated committees, representing countries on either the UN Security Council or the UN Human Rights Council.
The day quickly immersed delegates in the world of International diplomacy. Students delivered opening speeches, drafted resolutions, debated key global issues, and voted on a range of motions. For many, this was their first experience of formal Model UN debating, and it was fantastic to see them embrace the challenge with confidence and enthusiasm.
Our students worked incredibly hard throughout the day, developing their public speaking, negotiation and teamwork skills. Several delegates delivered their first Model UN speeches, demonstrating both courage and determination as they stepped outside their comfort zones.
Following the Model UN sessions, students travelled to Manav Rachna University to take part in radio interviews, sharing their experiences of India and reflecting on the conference so far.
The evenign then provided an opportunity for cultural immersion. Students enjoyed a range of games, listened to a live band, and even joined in with the performances. They also took part in Rangoli making, creating colourful designs inspired by Indian traditions.
The day concluded with another fantastic meal featuring a variety of Indian cuisine and plenty of opportunities to socialise and build friendships with students from Manav Rachna International School.
A memorable day of learning, cultural exchange and international collaboration.
The UN Summit concluded on Sunday, with students making their final representations for their countries in committee session, negotiating resolutions and, on one memorable occasion, accidentally triggering world war.
Diplomacy was therefore somewhat mixed, but the experience was an outstanding one for all involved, helping students develop their quick thinking, speech writing, public speaking and alliance-building skills.
The conference concluded with a prize giving and huge party in the school courtyard. Where our students joined local students on the dance floor and learnt some new moves. After a packed 12-hour day at the school, everyone returned to the accomodation for a well-earned rest.
Day 5 marked the final day. A visit to Agra provided a fitting conclusion to an unforgettable experience, with students enjoying a guided tour of the magnificent Taj Mahal before exploring the historic Agra Fort.
The excursion offered a fascinating insight into India's rich history and culture, while also providing an apportunity for students to reflect on the friendships, experiences and memories made throughout the trip.
A wonderful way to bring an incredible week to a close.
