Course Content

The French and Spanish GCSE courses enable students to:

• deepen their knowledge about how language works and enrich their vocabulary so they can develop independence in a wide range of contexts.
• communicate confidently and coherently in speech and writing, conveying what they want to say with increasing accuracy.
• express and develop thoughts and ideas with increasing spontaneity and fluency.
•  understand and respond to a range of authentic spoken and written material, including literary texts.
• develop a deeper awareness and understanding of the culture and identity of the countries and communities where French/Spanish is spoken.
• develop language learning skills both for immediate use and to prepare them for further language study and use in school, higher education or in employment.

The themes covered at GCSE enable students to carry out more mature conversations.

How are these courses assessed?

The GCSE examinations are set out in two tiers: foundation and higher and these apply to four exams (each skill is  25% of the total grade).

Where will this course take me?

Learning a language will help you build up transferable skills such as listening and communication skills, as well as promoting your understanding of different cultural values.

You will develop your knowledge of social, cultural and economic values of life work in France and Spain (or countries where these languages are spoken).

Language skills can lead directly into a career in translating, interpreting or teaching for instance, and are also in high demand in areas such as hospitality, tourism, journalism, law, diplomacy, publishing, charity work and business services.
