Subject Vision 

The language of mathematics is international. The basic skills of mathematics are a vital tool for the life opportunities of our students. To function in society, we all need to be able to communicate mathematically. Our aim is for all children to think mathematically, enabling them to reason, solve problems and assess risk in a range of contexts. At Ivanhoe, our Mathematics Mastery curriculum has been developed to ensure every child can achieve excellence in mathematics. Children can experience a sense of awe and wonder as they solve a problem for the first time, discover different solutions and make links between different areas of mathematics. 

As a Mathematics Department we aim to help students:

1. Analyse and communicate information and ideas about the world in which they live.
2. Perform useful and/or interesting tasks both within the school and adult life.
3. Understand that there are relationships between the various parts of mathematics.
4. Find an interest and fascination for the subject itself as well as encouraging awe and wonder for the world around them, and how this can lead to personal enjoyment and fulfilment.

6. Have a creative, flexible and inventive approach to problem solving.

11. Prepare themselves for the mathematical demands, which will be made of them in the work place or in further education.

YEar 7 topics

Our Year 7 curriculum has been designed following the guidance and framework set out by the NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics). We have used this guidance to create a rigorous, coherent and connected Year 7 mathematics curriculum. As outline in the National curriculum for mathematics ‘Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which students need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas. The programme of study for Key Stage 3 is organised into apparently distinct domains, but students should build on Key Stage 2 and connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning, and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems.’ Our curriculum emphasises teaching for mastery, this rejects superficial short-term coverage in favour of developing deep, connected understanding of key ideas. This forms a secure foundation for future learning, so making more efficient use of teaching and learning time.
